Overview
The Abyssinian is one of the most active and playful cats you can share a home with. Its signature is the ticked coat — each hair banded with several colors — that gives the breed a warm, glowing, almost wild appearance reminiscent of a tiny cougar.
“Abys” are intensely curious and endlessly busy. They investigate every open drawer, follow their people from room to room, and stay kitten-like well into adulthood. They are not lap cats so much as participants in whatever you are doing.
History
Long romanticized as the cat of the ancient Egyptians, the Abyssinian's true origins likely trace to coastal Southeast Asia and the Indian Ocean. It was refined into a formal breed in Britain in the late 19th century and is now one of the oldest recognized shorthairs.
Temperament
The Abyssinian is people-oriented and highly intelligent, thriving on interaction, climbing, and problem-solving. It dislikes being idle or alone for long and does best with company, vertical space, and plenty of enrichment.
