The Cairn Terrier is a small, shaggy working terrier bred in the Scottish Highlands to bolt vermin from the rock piles, or cairns, that gave the breed its name. Sturdy and fearless, it packs enormous spirit into a compact frame.
Curious, busy, and affectionate, the Cairn is a plucky, adaptable companion that loves to explore and dig. It is intelligent and independent with classic terrier gameness, thriving with an active family and secure spaces.
History
One of Scotland's oldest terriers, the Cairn hunted foxes, badgers, and rodents among Highland cairns and farms. Prized for its courage and hardiness, it gained wider fame in the 20th century, notably as Toto in The Wizard of Oz.
