Overview

The Dogo Argentino is a muscular, all-white Argentine breed developed for big-game hunting and, increasingly, as a loyal guardian and companion. Athletic and fearless, it was bred to hunt wild boar and puma in packs.

Deeply loyal, confident, and protective, the Dogo bonds strongly with its family and can be affectionate and gentle at home. Its strength, drive, and guarding instinct make early socialization and experienced ownership essential.

History

Created in the 1920s by Argentine physician Antonio Nores Martínez, the Dogo was bred from the extinct Córdoba fighting dog crossed with several breeds to produce a brave, athletic pack hunter with a stable temperament.

Health to watch

Know the biology.
Get ahead of it.

Deafness

As a predominantly white breed, the Dogo has an elevated deafness risk; puppies can be BAER-tested.

Hip dysplasia

Joint malformation occurs in this large athletic breed; screening and lean weight help protect the hips.

Skin & sun sensitivity

The white coat offers little sun protection; the breed can be prone to sunburn and skin issues.
