Overview

The Lagotto Romagnolo is an ancient Italian breed with a dense, woolly, curly coat, renowned today as the premier truffle-hunting dog. Once a water retriever in the marshes of Romagna, it became a specialized scent worker for finding truffles.

Affectionate, keen, and intelligent, the Lagotto bonds closely with its family and thrives on scent work and problem-solving. It is an energetic but manageable companion that enjoys jobs, games, and close involvement in family life.

History

Originating in the Romagna region of Italy, the Lagotto worked as a water retriever before the wetlands were drained, after which it was redirected to hunting truffles. Its exceptional nose and focus made it the truffle dog par excellence.

The Lagotto is loving, alert, and eager to work, generally good with family and other pets. It is intelligent and trainable, thriving on scent games and mental challenge, and it enjoys activity without the extreme drive of some gundogs.

Health to watch

Know the biology.
Get ahead of it.

Hip dysplasia

Joint malformation occurs in the breed; screening and lean weight help protect the hips over time.

Benign juvenile epilepsy

A breed-specific form of epilepsy affecting puppies occurs; a DNA test identifies affected and carrier dogs.

Storage disease & eye issues

An inherited neurological storage disease and eye disorders occur; DNA testing and exams help screen for them.

General breed tendencies, not a diagnosis. Every dog is an individual — pair this with regular veterinary care.
