Overview

The Sloughi is an elegant, smooth-coated North African sighthound, sometimes called the Arabian Greyhound. Lean and racy, it was bred by nomadic peoples to course hare, gazelle, and other game across desert and mountain terrain.

Reserved, graceful, and deeply bonded to its family, the Sloughi is affectionate with its people yet aloof and sensitive with strangers. It combines a sighthound's speed and independence with a quiet, dignified devotion.

History

Prized for centuries across the Maghreb region of North Africa, the Sloughi was a treasured hunting companion of Berber and Bedouin peoples. Valued for its speed, endurance, and loyalty, it remains a rare and ancient sighthound.

Temperament

ReservedGracefulLoyalSensitiveFast

The Sloughi is devoted and gentle with family, aloof with strangers, and notably sensitive to harsh handling. It is independent with a strong prey drive, needing gentle training, socialization, and secure running space.

Health to watch

Know the biology.
Get ahead of it.

Anesthesia sensitivity

Low body fat means sighthounds process anesthetics differently; surgical teams should use appropriate protocols.

Progressive retinal atrophy

A breed-specific form of this eye disease occurs; a DNA test identifies affected and carrier dogs.

Generally healthy

The Sloughi is a hardy, long-lived breed with relatively few widespread inherited disorders.

General breed tendencies, not a diagnosis. Every dog is an individual — pair this with regular veterinary care.

Care essentials

01

Exercise

Regular sprints in a secure area suit this runner; its prey drive makes open spaces risky.

02

Containment

A strong chase instinct means secure fencing and leashed walks are essential.

03

Warmth & sensitivity

With a thin coat, the Sloughi feels cold easily and, being sensitive, needs gentle handling.

Care that fits the Sloughi.
