Overview
Few breeds read as instantly regal as the Afghan Hound. Behind the flowing silk coat is a true sighthound: lean, deep-chested, and capable of explosive speed and remarkable agility over rough ground.
It is famously independent. Affectionate on its own terms and aloof with strangers, the Afghan pairs a dignified reserve with sudden bursts of clownish play that surprise people expecting only aloofness.
History
One of the oldest dog types, the Afghan Hound was developed in the mountains of Afghanistan to course game such as hare and gazelle, and to work alongside hunters over terrain where endurance and independent decision-making mattered.
Temperament
The Afghan is intelligent but not eager to please in the conventional sense — it thinks for itself. It responds to gentle, consistent handling and a strong bond, and it never does well with harsh correction.
Health to watch
Very low body fat means sighthounds metabolize anesthetics differently. Any surgical team should use sighthound-appropriate protocols.
A malformed hip joint can lead to arthritis. Screening breeding stock and keeping the dog lean both help.
An underactive thyroid can cause weight and coat changes. It is manageable with a simple daily medication once diagnosed.
