Overview

The Petit Basset Griffon Vendéen — the “PBGV” — is a small, shaggy French scenthound bred to hunt rabbit over the rough terrain of the Vendée region. Compact and hardy, it has a tousled coat and an irrepressibly cheerful disposition.

Happy, extroverted, and busy, the PBGV bonds warmly with its family and gets along well with other dogs. It is an independent, scent-driven hound with abundant energy, thriving on activity and an owner who enjoys its lively spirit.

History

Developed in the Vendée region of France, the PBGV was bred to trail rabbit and small game through dense brush and rugged ground. Its rough coat protected it in the field, and its stamina and nose made it a capable pack hound.

The PBGV is happy, sociable, and lively, good with family and other dogs from its pack heritage. It is independent and scent-driven, so training takes patience and humor, and it needs plenty of exercise and secure containment.

Health to watch

Know the biology.
Get ahead of it.

Hip dysplasia

Joint malformation occurs in the breed; screening and lean weight help protect the hips over time.

Eye conditions

Certain hereditary eye disorders occur; regular eye exams help catch them early.

Ear infections

The drop ears trap moisture and debris and need routine cleaning to prevent infection.

General breed tendencies, not a diagnosis. Every dog is an individual — pair this with regular veterinary care.

Care essentials

01

Exercise

This energetic scenthound needs vigorous daily activity and enjoys scent games and play.

02

Coat

The rough, shaggy coat needs regular brushing and occasional tidying to prevent mats.

03

Containment

A strong nose and independent streak mean a secure fence and leashed walks are must-haves.
