Overview
The Plott is a powerful, brindle-coated scenthound bred in the American mountains to track and bay large game such as bear and boar. Tenacious and courageous, it is North Carolina's state dog and the only American scenthound not descended from foxhounds.
Loyal, alert, and driven, the Plott bonds closely with its family and is more devoted and protective than many hounds. It is an athletic, confident dog that thrives on activity and purpose, best suited to active, outdoorsy owners.
History
Developed by the Plott family, German immigrants who settled in the North Carolina mountains in the 18th century, the breed descends from Hanoverian hounds used for big-game tracking. It became a prized bear and boar hound.

Temperament
The Plott is devoted, brave, and energetic, affectionate with family and more protective than typical hounds. It is intelligent and driven with a strong prey and scent instinct, needing exercise, engagement, and secure containment.
Health to watch
Joint malformation occurs in active breeds; screening and lean weight help protect the hips over time.
The deep chest raises the risk of gastric torsion; avoid heavy activity right around meals.
The drop ears trap moisture and need routine cleaning to prevent recurring infections.
General breed tendencies, not a diagnosis. Every dog is an individual — pair this with regular veterinary care.
Care essentials
This driven scenthound needs substantial daily activity and mental engagement to stay balanced.
A strong nose and prey drive mean a secure fence and leashed walks are essential.
The short coat is easy to maintain with weekly brushing; clean the ears routinely.
XPET builds each pet a digital twin — modeling their real biology instead of breed averages, so care stays personal.
