Overview

The Polish Lowland Sheepdog — the “PON” — is a medium, shaggy herding breed with a profuse coat that often falls over its eyes. Compact and muscular, it was bred to herd and guard flocks across the Polish lowlands with intelligence and drive.

Confident, lively, and devoted, the PON bonds closely with its family and is famous for an excellent memory. It is a clever, alert herder that needs mental and physical work, thriving with an engaged owner who provides structure.

History

An old Polish breed with roots going back centuries, the Polish Lowland Sheepdog herded sheep and served as a farm guardian. Nearly lost after World War II, it was revived by dedicated breeders and remains a beloved national breed.

Temperament

ConfidentLivelyDevotedIntelligentAlert

The PON is smart, self-assured, and affectionate, watchful with strangers and bonded to its family. It is independent and strong-willed with herding instincts, needing consistent, positive training and plenty of activity.

Health to watch

Know the biology.
Get ahead of it.

Hip dysplasia

Joint malformation occurs in the breed; screening and lean weight help protect the hips over time.

Progressive retinal atrophy

This hereditary eye disease can cause vision loss; genetic screening of breeding dogs helps prevent it.

Hypothyroidism

An underactive thyroid can affect coat, weight, and energy, and is manageable once diagnosed.

General breed tendencies, not a diagnosis. Every dog is an individual — pair this with regular veterinary care.
